UROCAT attends The Focal International Congress
On October 23rd and 24th, Madrid became the world epicenter of focal therapy for prostate cancer with the celebration of THE FOCAL, organized by the University of Navarra Clinic (CUN).
The event, led by Dr. Bernardino Miñana, head of the Urology Department at the CUN and a Spanish leader in this field, brought together the world’s leading specialists to analyze and share advances in focal therapy, a pioneering treatment that targets only the area of the prostate affected by the tumor. This preserves urinary continence and sexual function, establishing it as an effective alternative to radical treatments.
During the congress, the most recent results from the CUN were presented, with an average follow-up of 4 years: 88% of treated tumors remain controlled, with a relapse rate of 12% in the treated area and 18% in untreated areas. Furthermore, 100% of patients maintain urinary continence, and 97% retain sexual function.
“The treatment is outpatient, precise, and personalized, and allows for cancer control while minimizing adverse effects,” emphasized Dr. Miñana.
The conference also addressed the challenges for its widespread implementation and Spain’s role in the international consolidation of this technique. Among the participants, Dr. Salvador Esquena, director of UROCAT, took part in the debate on the future of focal therapy in the management of prostate cancer.
